San Francisco was our neighbouring big city for nine months when we lived in Mountain View. As such, we made quite a few trips to see the place when family and friends were visiting. On the majority of occasions, we'd do the standard tourist circuit taking in all the postcard sights, so we can't really profess to know the city inside and out.

There's no doubting the uniqueness of this city. It doesn't feel like the usual drab affair, everything-with-cheese, "you have yourself a great day now!" type mentality of the majority of American cities. This place has real character, and so much infusion from all of the communities and cultures who have made it their home.

Of special note for most tourists is Pier 39, Alcatraz, and of course, the Golden Gate Bridge. This wonderous site is a must see from as many angles as possible. Our favourite way is to walk or bike across it. There's a great lookout point at the far end as you enter Marin county. Well worth the short trip for the photo.
