It happened by chance, but we decided to move to the Netherlands for a while to see what the Dutch way of life is like. After spending a year there, we're glad to report that it's a chilled place to live.
Living in Amsterdam, you might get the impression that it's a continual stag or hen weekender, but life here is as normal as anywhere else you'd choose to settle. Sure they're pretty relaxed on what is considered against the law, and to be honest, it is one of the city's plus points. It has as a very laid back atmosphere most of the time, but then every now and again the Dutch party harder than any nation we've ever seen ... Queen's Day parade being an absolute must see event!
The inner city is very touristy and expensive (London prices), but come out to the suburbs and you'll find some great parks, chilled cafe bars, all kinds of characters walking and biking ... the real Netherlands lifestyle.
Our most enjoyable outings have been on bikes up into the north of country, through what are called 'the Waterlands' heading towards places such as Volendam, Edam, Monnickendam, and Marken. A biking daytrip to Hoge Veluwe National Park also very enjoyable and peaceful. The flower displays at Keukenhof are very impressive and a worthwhile trip during the spring months.
